Session Abstract

Paraprofessionals are a vital part of the American education system, acting as cultural/linguistic liaisons between ELLs and schools. Due to changing demographics it is imperative that paraeducators become proficient in theories and strategies to help ELLs succeed with Academic Content Standards. A study of 57 paraprofessionals found that when given instruction, paraprofessionals actively apply principles from SLA theory and use teaching and learning strategies intended for use with ELLs when instructed how to do so.
