The Cafeteria as Classroom: Cultivating Cafeteria Environments that Promote Healthy Eating

Solomon

Session Abstract

Thinking about all the different ways food and food education can be integrated into the school day is an important goal of farm to school programs, and participants will gain a broad understanding of farm to school's scope. The school cafeteria is the place where food is most often served and therefore a prime setting for students to learn about healthy eating. Paraeducators are often given the rather daunting role of managing large groups of students in the cafeteria during lunchtime. This interactive workshop will offer tools and strategies for paraeducators to help cultivate a cafeteria environment that is a calm and pleasant place that promotes healthy eating and social and emotional development.
